FAQ

What GSM range is spunbond produced in, and what does GSM control?
The commercial range runs from roughly 8 to 200 g/m², with the mainstream concentrated between 8 and 120 g/m². GSM is not just a weight: it simultaneously controls tensile strength, opacity and coverage, stiffness, hand-feel, production cost per square metre — and, as a separate page in this FAQ explains, the customs subheading your shipment falls under. Working widths are ordinarily 1.6 m, 2.4 m and 3.2 m,

How does calender bonding change fabric properties?
In calender bonding, the web passes between heated embossed rollers. Only the raised points of the pattern touch the fabric, partially melting the filaments and fusing them into discrete bond points. The practical levers are clear: more bond area, higher temperature and higher pressure give a stronger but stiffer, less bulky, less soft fabric. Less bond area gives a softer, more drapable material with lower tensile strength. The bond pattern is also what produces the visible grain a buyer inspects under a light box
27
Which polymers are used to make spunbond nonwoven?
Polypropylene (PP) dominates, because it is inexpensive, hydrophobic, chemically resistant and easy to spinbond. Polyester (PET) is chosen where higher temperature resistance and higher strength are needed; polyamide (PA) where abrasion and heat resistance matter; and bio-based options such as PLA for compostable grades. Market reports segment spunbond by material into polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester and others, with PP holding by far the largest share

What is SMS nonwoven, and when should you choose it over plain spunbond?
SMS is a three-layer spunmelt composite: spunbond on both outer faces for strength, with a meltblown core for barrier and filtration. Choose SMS when liquid or particle barrier is the requirement — surgical gowns, drapes, hygiene backsheets. Choose plain spunbond when strength, cost and hand-feel dominate, as in bag lining, furniture and agricultural covers. SMMS adds a second meltblown layer for higher barrier at a cost premium — roughly 8–15% above SMS at equal GSM,

How does spunbond differ from meltblown nonwoven?
Spunbond uses continuous filaments that are drawn and laid, so it is stronger, thicker and more abrasion-resistant. Meltblown blows molten polymer out with high-velocity air to form extremely fine microfibres, which gives far better filtration and barrier performance but lower mechanical strength. In practice the two are complementary rather than competing, and they are frequently combined into one fabric — which is what SMS is.

What are the process steps in a spunbond production line?
Five steps, in order: (1) polymer granulate is melted, filtered and metered; (2) it is extruded through spinnerets into continuous filaments; (3) the filaments are drawn and attenuated by high-speed air or mechanical take-up, which aligns the polymer chains; (4) they are laid down on a forming belt into a random web; (5) the web is bonded — most commonly by calender rollers — then slit, wound and inspected. Because steps 1–4 run continuously, spunbond is one of the lowest-cost ways to make a strong nonwoven web.
31
What is spunbond nonwoven fabric and how is it made?
Spunbond nonwoven is made by extruding polymer into continuous filaments, drawing those filaments to orient them, laying them into a random web on a moving belt, and then bonding the web. Because spinning, web formation and bonding happen on one integrated line, there is no yarn and no weaving stage. That is why spunbond fabric does not fray at cut edges and why it holds its shape when die-cut or slit — a property that matters for linings and interlinings.
